Lower Level Sports Cards, located on Henderson Highway just north of the Disraeli Bridge, has called Elmwood home for nearly 6 years.

In September 2012, owner Mike took a look at the basement of the historic Elmwood building at 189 Henderson Highway. At the time, the offices of the organization now called One Hope Ministries had moved from the basement to the top floor.

The main floor, which was also available at the time, was used to supply the community with brand new discount-priced clothing for a few short years.

Today, eight modernized condominiums comprise the upper two floors of the building.

Lower Level Sports Cards has remained in the basement, except for last summer when the store’s doors were closed and the entire inventory was moved out to accommodate construction efforts.

1 of 11 sports card stores in Winnipeg

There are not a lot of “pure” sports card stores in Winnipeg anymore, meaning that most stores now rely more on sales of team memorabilia, clothing, and other products and services such as framing to make ends meet.

However, Lower Level is one of a handful of Winnipeg stores that has a deep inventory of over one million sports cards. In this particular store, that number of single cards is closer to 5 million cards and counting. 5 million does not include any of the cards in sealed packs and boxes.

Mike says that he carries an expansive variety of cards; from vintage cards (1950s – 1970s), to 1990s unopened boxes, all the way to the collector patches, autographs, and numbered cards high-end collectors hunt for today.

The card collecting hobby wants your kids

Despite the changes, or maybe because of the changes in the sports card collecting hobby over the last thirty years, what brings the most pleasure to Lower Level’s owner is when kids come in.

Kids who are looking for their favourite players and light up with delight when they find him.

Kids who are still happy to open up a dollar pack of hockey, baseball, basketball, or football cards, something Mike makes sure to have plenty on hand.

Mike recently purchased a good chunk of the sports cards and memorabilia from Face Off Cards. He’ll be incorporating this collection into his existing inventory while also organizing his store, which is still in a slight state of upheaval after last year’s moving.
